A Scenic Journey on the Natchez Trace
Our 10th mother-daughter trip took us on a beautiful journey just an hour and a half from our hometown. We opted for the scenic route via the Natchez Trace, where we encountered wild turkeys, ancient mounds, and picturesque country farms. A slight detour led us to the Windsor Ruins, a grand reminder of a bygone era.
Exploring History and Heritage
The Windsor Ruins, once an enslaver’s property, astonished us with their massive structure, a glimpse into the late 1800s. Not far from this site is Alcorn State, an HBCU, the proximity of the enslavers’ home and an HBCU demonstrated the resilience and excellence of African-Americans.
Juneteenth at Forks in the Road
Our visit to Natchez was especially meaningful since it was around Juneteenth. We explored Melrose which was an enslaver’s estate, where 700 lit bags represented the enslaved African descendants. At Forks in the Road, a former auction site, we connected with personal history, recalling stories my granddad shared.
Learning About the Melrose Estate and Natchez Museum of African American Culture
The Melrose Estate, owned by the McMurrans, revealed intriguing stories. There were names in thr slave quarters. Some read Big John and Little John. It made me wonder if this nsming system is connected to how black people nickname their descendants. Since this was an estste and not a plantation, it was more favorable at the time. The broken expression of an enslaved worker demonstrated that it was still a heart breaking time.
Simple Joys and Unexpected Adventures
The Joy of Simple Things
Despite our historical explorations, the trip’s charm lay in simple moments with my mom. We laughed at getting lost near the Windsor Ruins, encountering men on ATVs and pickup trucks. We said it was time to get the heck out of dodge. We savored local cuisine, gawked at a humongous salad, and pampered ourselves with mini facials, manicures, and pedicures.
A Cozy Stay
Our Airbnb embodied Southern charm, complete with an artsy backyard and a cozy porch with rocking chairs. These little luxuries, combined with our adventurous spirit, made our stay memorable.
Reflections on Courage and Growth
Overcoming Fears
This trip also reminded me of my mom’s bravery. From our first trip in Florida, where she nervously approached the beach while a hundred yards away, to her bold step onto a boat in DC after 40 years, her journey has been one of overcoming fears. In Costa Rica, she surprised me by standing close to the beach while I went on an ATV, and even enjoying a massage for the first time, a practice she now cherishes.
Embracing Bravery Together
These trips have been more than just vacations; they have been opportunities for growth and connection. Each journey uncovers more family history and strengthens our bond. Our recent trip, closer to home yet rich in experiences, was a testament to beauty, simplicity, and bravery.
