Living Free: My Journey to Embracing the One Word That Defined 2024

Introduction: What Does "Free" Mean to You?

As Americans, we celebrate freedom in countless ways—songs, slogans like "Land of the Free," and our cherished liberties like freedom of speech. Yet, the concept of being truly free goes beyond patriotic ideals. For me, 2024 has been about discovering personal freedom. This blog shares how a single word reshaped my year and inspired profound life changes.

The Journey to Finding My One Word

Sometimes, God—speaks to us through repetition. That’s how I realized "Free" was my word for 2024.

- The Song That Sparked It All: In 2023, I couldn’t stop humming Free Your Mind by En Vogue. When a counselor mentioned the same song in conversation, I knew it wasn’t just a coincidence—it was a #Godwink moment.

- A Self-Made Quote: One day at work, I coined the phrase, “People are free to be who they want to be. I’m free to be me.” My coworker’s enthusiastic agreement cemented the idea that personal freedom isn’t just about others; it’s about being authentic to yourself.

- A Musical Affirmation: On a road trip, I heard Toni Armani’s Free at Last on Spotify. The lyrics "Finally free, finally free" resonated so deeply that I locked in my one word for the upcoming year.

- The Perfect Gift: Without knowing my decision, a coworker designed a shirt for me embroidered with "Finally Free." It was a beautiful confirmation of the path I was stepping into.

Leaning Into Freedom

Freedom sounds idyllic, but it’s not always comfortable—especially for someone like me who craves predictability. Living my word meant confronting my anxiety, over-planning tendencies, and fears. For example:

- Breaking Free from Security: I left a well-paid government job after 18 years. It was a leap of faith, one that required trusting the unknown and embracing discomfort.

- Challenging Familiarity: I learned that people often remain in harmful situations because they’re familiar. Real freedom meant leaving the metaphorical cage—even if it was open—because staying felt safer than stepping out.

Are You Truly Free?

Freedom isn’t just a concept; it’s a choice. Sometimes, the only thing holding us back is our fear of the unfamiliar. Ask yourself: Are you staying in an unlocked cage because it feels safer than walking away? True freedom starts when you choose to let go.
